The story that your are more than likely speaking of is called "The Tell-Tale Heart" written by Edgar Allen Poe. In the story the old man is buried beneath planks because his neighbor does not like what he refers to as his "vulture" eye.

Every night he goes to the old man's room and watches him with intent to kill him. He does this night after night watching the man intently, while the old man is horrified by the thought of someone being in his room he is repeatedly frightened night after night. However, by him doing this, he causes the man to have a heart attack from fear. Hence the part of the story where he says, "the heart had burst".

He scared the man into having a heart attack by constantly scaring him at night. The heavy beating of the man's heart was as a result of being terrorized night after night by someone coming into his room and watching him. There was no blood, and in the story the man puts a bed over the old dead guy. He eventually places him beneath the planks of his floor to conceal the dead body. The problem is he can still hear the beating heart of the old dead man that he scared to death, ulitmately by giving him a heart attack.

In this story, the beating heart continues to be heard in the head of the murderer. Some may say that he continued to hear the beating heart because of his conscience.
