How do I achieve the desaturated vintage effect on my Canon EOS XS?

I have seen several pictures with a desaturated, almost vintage effect, but I can't figure out how to do it. I have photoshop as well, but I can't seem to get it down. Desaturating the photo doesn't do it... it is still missing the pinkish 70's tint. Can anyone help me?

Hey, I think I know what you mean, more or less

in photoshop try the following:

open your picture
duplicate the layer and rename it (let's call it no2)
desaturate layer no2 (image => adjustment = > desaturate)
with layer no2 selected, change opacity (you need to try what suits you best, lets start with 50%)
creat new layer and select Paint Bucket tool (G)
as foreground colour pick bright warm yellow and colour new created layer (no3) with this color
click right on layer no3 and change layer style to screen
change opacity to whatever suits you best, lets start with 11.
