Victorian Perfect
Posted in Garden Antiques on 07/27/2010 06:44 pm by admindid the victorians have the technology to saw and machine hard stone (e.g granite)?
I have noticed that the stone window cills in many victorian buildings in my town (melbourne australia) are made mm perfect... did they have diamond tiped saws for cutting stone 120 years ago? The stone is very hard ... known locally as bluestone.
I don't know exactly what hardness they were capable of cutting, but I do know that stone for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. was quarried during that same era from marble quarries in Colorado, and that was done with saws - so clearly they had SOME kind of stone-cutting technology.
