Type Glass

I am designing a desk of wood to build myself and I would like to have a piece of glass covering a wooden top that allows me to put "stuff" (pics, calendar, etc) underneath. What type of glass and how thick should this be??
1/4" clear annealed seamed (the edges wont be sharp if you specify its for a top)
thats just plain old glass. they can even drill holes for cords if you need.
plexiglass will scratch over time and will not clean easily. you're never supposed to use glass cleaner on it.
plexiglass works fine if you're going to let kids use the desk and are willing to put up with a dull surface.
also , glass is usually cheaper
dont use tempered glass, it may work well on patios since it breaks in smaller pieces, but on a desk the edges are exposed and it can blow up if bumped with anything metal (including rings!)
