Kitchen Island

Do you tile around a kitchen island or under it?

My husband and I will be remodeling the kitchen of the house we are buying. We will be ripping up the existing carpet & linoleum under the carpet. Since the existing cabinets are old, we will have to build an island from scratch to match the cabinets.

My question is: Do we anchor the island down first to the sub-flooring then tile around it, OR...

tile the entire floor first then anchor the island to the tile?
we're planning on using porcelain tile since it's more durable than ceramic (i've found in my research)

You can do either it doesn t matter. I ve done it both ways. It is much easier to set the tile and set the counter atop the tile. This will also give you a nice clean lines and no grout up to the cabinet ( which will crack).
Also setting it atop the tile it will change the heigth difference from the other cabinets. This I m assuming your doing ceramic tile since you need a better base than you do with a vinyl tile.
By setting it atop it s much easier to do floor prep to lay any new subflooring down thats needed.
Theres both sides the question, but from installation stand point, its much easier to install the flooring 1 st ,although care must be taken when working over a new floor.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
