Tack Upholstery

.?
I'm making french memo boards (if you don't know what I'm talking about, here's a picture: http://allisonscreations.com/images/PalmettoMoonMemoBoard.jpg) for my friends who are going away for college as a present, and I'm almost done with them, but I have one problem: the cork board I bought is backed with cardboard, so the tacks aren't sticking very well to the cork, especially with the fabric and batting I put on top of the cork. I was thinking about just hot gluing the tacks down, but then they'd only be attached to the fabric, and not the actual cork board. Any ideas as to what I should do? Don't say get new tacks, because I also tried upholstery tacks, which are longer, but they pierced the board and were coming out of the back
.
Or should I try pins instead?
Using buttons in front and behind your memo board (buttons will help to keep your thread from pulling throught the memo board) Use needle and thread to sew the buttons firmly in place where ribbons cross each other - like you would have placed the tacks. If you still wish to have the upholstery tack in place, remove the tack prong with pliers and use hot glue to glue them over the buttons. Make sure your buttons fit inside the upholstery tack top so they don't show.
