Replacement Latch

I live in an apartment that has outdated fixtures. The bathroom doorknob recently cracked so it was removed. We bought a replacement doorknob and noticed too late that our door does not have that little rectangular recess where the plate on the side of the door is supposed to fit. What kind of doorknob am I looking for? I never saw a door that didn't have that and our building maintenance sucks.
the rectangular recess would be a deadbolt but if its in a bathroom then that should not be there
