Not sure what you mean by "type of mission." The word "was" implies that the mission has ended. The singular "Rover" implies that there was only one rover. The two Mars Exploration Rovers are part of a ongoing robotic mission of exploring Mars. The mission began in 2003 with the two rovers (MER-A and MER-B Opportunity Spirit) landing on Mars in different places to explore the Martian surface and geology.
