What is the difference between the set and reset switches in an SR latch?

Do they do the same things but just have different names? What's the difference between them?

S sets the Q output and clears Qbar, while R sets Qbar and clears Q. The terminology is simply a way of relating the inputs to the outputs, and indicating the effect of the inputs on the outputs. Q is taken as the 'main' output, while Qbar is assumed to be the inverted output.

The latch (or bistable) is completely symmetrical, so the labelling is arbitrary. Nevertheless it is essential that the inputs and the outputs should be labelled in some way or another, and that the user should know the effect of an input on a particular output. If you were to reverse the labelling of the inputs, then you would have to reverse the labelling of the outputs as well.
