by huge fireplace I mean the opening is about 4 ft wide and 3 ft tall - the inside is even larger.
With a fireplace that large you have all kinds of options in fireplace inserts. Any insert that is EPA rated will be efficient at generating heat as well and will have a blower for circulating the heat. For aesthetic reasons you may want to look for one with a glass on the door. I always thought that style looks classy, although some people think they look like a crematorium, Ha! I guess there is no accounting for taste.
Anyway, you may want to get a chimney balloon in that open flue while you pick out what insert you want. Having no damper in a fireplace that size is like leaving a door open.
On venting... the installer will vent up the existing chimney but they may have to put in a stainless flue liner. This is very common for newer inserts.
