Drapes and valances for above a french door?

I have french doors in my bedroom that open inwards. The walls are high. I'd like to use longer drapes to flank the doors, and mount them on a rod about a foot above the top of the doors . What should I use to cover the gap between the rod and the tops of the doors that won't interfere with them opening? Should I buy matching straight valances, and shorten as needed, or make a cornice board and cover it with fabric from another panel?

Either will work but it really depends on your decorating style. I personally think a decorative cornice would be elegant and a valance would be functional and practical.
