i have this problem regarding the corbel code provision stating that 1. Reinforcement An (Area of reinforcement to resist tensile force Nuc) An = Nuc/ .85 Fy where Nuc shall not be taken less than .20Vu etc.
2. area of primary tension reinforcement As, shall be computed using the bigger value of As = 2/3 Avf + An
As = Af + An
actually their are 15 codes for this provision and its hard to understand this. can anyone help me interpret this?
or how this formula had been derived? we're currently forced by our professor to explain this codes and she'll be asking questions regarding this corbel provision and i can't ask anyone to explain this to me.

The fact that your professor is asking you to explain the code is ludicrous. And you can tell her I said so and I have been practicing since 1970. Practicing engineers have a hard enough time trying to design to the code let along understanding how the various code committees derived the equations. All I can tell you about corbels is as follows:
a. Corbels are a special case of cantilevered beams where the span to depth ratios are less than one.
b. Corbels can fail by shearing along the interface between the column and corbel, by the yielding of the tension tie bars along the top of the corbel. These bars are placed perpendicular to the wall to which the corbels are attached. They can also fail by the crushing or splitting of the concrete.
c. The code provisions established in the ACI code are empirical and have been determined through experimentation and testing.
You should read the code provisions in the 2005 ACI Code and look for design examples in other concrete texts. I would suggest looking in concrete texts by Wang and Salmon.
